The Program

Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus in Bismarck, North Dakota is immensely pleased to offer a $1,000 scholarship to the winner of a solo vocal music competition. The competition will be held on April 13, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Bismarck State College. The competition participants must be in their senior year of high school with an expected graduation date of May 2025 (or have graduated early at the conclusion of the first semester).

The purpose of the program is to provide students who are currently involved in their high school's choral music program an opportunity to perform their solo vocal repertoire for their friends, family, and wider community. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage current high school students to continue their music education, and especially their choral music education, as they transition into their college years in the hope that music and singing may continue to be a part of their lives well into adulthood.

The Competition Format

The competition will be adjudicated by three judges from the membership of Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus. Participants will sing one piece from their current repertoire with the accompanist of their choice, an accompanist will not be provided. The piece may be from the standard repertoire of German, Italian, French, or English art songs or arias, or any appropriate musical theater piece. The performances will be given in the style of a solo vocal recital with each participant having a turn to sing. There will be no hard time limit for individual performances, but pieces should be an appropriate length; we discourage singing multiple movements from a song cycle for example.

Since the competition is formatted as a recital, the individual performances will be open to the public; participants are encouraged to invite their friends and family to watch and listen. Participants will be able to stay in the audience and take in their fellow participants' performances until their own respective performance time. After each performance, participants may return to the audience to enjoy the rest of the performances. Please make every effort to avoid leaving before the recital ends.

At the conclusion of the recital, the judges will confer to determine the winner. The winner will be contacted and the details of the next steps will be discussed. After the winner has been notified, plans will be laid to include the winner as a featured soloist at BMCC's spring concert where the winner will perform their solo. To receive their award, the winner will need to provide proof of their registration at a college or university, and of their registration for at least a single semester of choir in the 2025-2026 academic year. Once that information is verified, the award amount will be dispersed to the individual in the form of a check from BMCC.
